Bragging Rights 
Panama, Iowa - It started with two, women and their simple desire have better playground equipment in their park. Eight years and $27,000 later, the Panama Young Mothers Group is a source of considerable pride in, this town of 212 people. The 16 members of the organization say, they want to make their community better for their children now, in the hope that adults ,they will find Panama a fitting place to live and work. Since forming in 1992, the Panama Young Mothers have resurfaced the town's tennis courts, purchased window air conditioners for area elementary schools and helped, needy families during the holidays. Recognition of the Panama Young Mothers has extended beyond the town's borders. Earlier this year, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce presented the group with its Special Appreciation Award. Panama has a diversified business base, including Panama Transfer, the community's largest employer. The community has more than the necessary services for day-to-day living, offering youth, Augie's Teen Center, two day care facilities and a Little Angels Preschool. Senior citizens are active in Golden Age Club, Panama Sewing Circle and numerous card clubs. St. Mary's Catholic Church has just completed a restoration project which included its many statues, stations and its sanctuary mural. 

Panama is a progressive and growing community featuring a new housing addition with eight new homes and many choice building lots still available.

Tourism 
St. Mary's Catholic Church - German Catholic immigrants completed construction in 1908 of this church featuring Gothic style architecture which is enhanced by a magnificent high altar and pillar-supported arches. Stained glass windows depict the lives of the Holy Family and early church saints and the handsome Rose Window decorates the tower. Also worthy of mention is the three-dimensional replica of the Lord's Supper on the front altar. 

Whispering Pines Park - what began in 1928 as a educational project grew to over 2,000 seedlings, trees and shrubs, but later Hwy 191 cut through the nursery. The park now contains a bandstand (built in the 1880s) which was used by Father Flanagan and the Boys Town Band. 

H.A. Tarkington burial site - a county judge of the now defunct city of Shelbyville in the 1840-60's, well known for his activities as a Methodist minister and believed to be one of those who brought the Methodist religion to Shelby County. 

History 
Began as a village known as "Crandall's Station" during the construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. The City was officially platted by the Milwaukee Land Co. on April 12, 1882.
