Metropolitan Area Network in Harlan,
Iowa
Harlan's
10-mile Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) connects 18 sites inside the
city limits. The Network was constructed with excess capacity to
accommodate any public or private enterprise that would require expanded
communication services. In addition to the fiber infrastructure,
Harlan has also constructed a Hybrid Fiber Coax Network (HFCN) that can
provide high speed access to every Harlan home and business.
ATM technology
The network uses ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology to move information around the city on the fiber loop at an OC-3 rate (155 Megabits per second). It supports voice, video and data traffic simultaneously and computer networks that are using ethernet can be connected to the MAN with secure data
transfer.
Cable Modem Internet
access
The MAN provides Cable Modem Internet connectivity and e-mail service can be provided by the MAN also. Harlan's Cable Modems also extend the Internet from the MAN to the home and small business for those who cannot afford a direct fiber
link.
Video conferencing
Governmental entities can connect through Harlan's three Iowa Communications Network sites and commercial entities can connect through the Harlan Municipal Utilities and Farmers Mutual Cooperative Telephone
Co.
Work at home
Whether it is one or dozens of employees interfacing with a home office, the MAN in conjunction with Cable Modems, has the speed and capacity to allow
a company to reduce overhead, promote employee relations and reach an untapped workforce through the use of work at home applications. See articles on adjoining pages. |
