In 1995, before anyone really understood the implications of the World Wide Web, three local and two national companies forged ahead to build an infrastructure that allowed Shelby County to become one of the most technologically advanced counties in the nation.

Shelby County is served by 100 % Digital Switching and SONET Ring Fiber Optics to every corner of the county and over 300 miles of fiber optics

Farmers Mutual Telephone Coop, offers 56kbs & DSL from 128 kps to 8 mbs access throughout Shelby and surrounding counties.

 

Harlan Municipal Utilities wired nearly every Harlan home, business, school, hospital and governmental entity  with a fiber optic and coaxial cable network. This network allows superior high-speed access (1.5 mbs to 10 mbs) within the City and out to the World.

 

Iowa Telecom, this statewide provider offers 56k to 1.024 mbs DSL service to a majority of Shelby County. 

 

Marne Elk Horn, offers Elk Horn 56kbs & DSL from 128 kps to 8 mbs access. They are one of Western Iowa's largest ISP's and have just begun offering wireless Internet in selected cities.

Mediacom, this national provider has announced a new high-speed Internet service under the Mediacom Online brand name. Installation of their cable modem system in Harlan is anticipated in 2002.
